As a child Baker, he spent a good period of his time on the road with his parents who were missionaries. The father James Colson Baker struggled with depression and joblessness while the mother Sonia Alane left them when the age of nine. Baker and his dad moved to Denver and lived in the home of his aunt's father. The other kids of the neighborhood bullied Baker because he was poor. When he was in sixth grade, he began listening to hip-hop. Baker has released four mixtapes between 2007 and 2010, before signing to Bad Boy Records. The career of the rapper took off after that, with each of his albums reaching the top 10 of charts.
